But back in 1961, 'The Cannons of the Isle of Navarone', reinforced by a brilliant cast, simply could not fail to shock the audience. Now, after the Dirty Dozen, Impossible Missions and Inglourious Basterds, this arrangement is no longer surprising. In addition, it is not at all clear who exactly will survive from the team. ![]() Despite the obviousness of the outcome, the viewer is simply not given a reasonable basis for a happy ending until the very end. ![]() And the heroes have to be not just killers, but real spies and scoundrels. They are sent out rather out of despair than out of common sense. The bottom line is that the heroes are sent to a deliberately disastrous cause. It is not for nothing that this adventure picture was nominated for an Oscar and still regularly knocks out beautiful positions in all kinds of top charts for the best films of all time. Films about spies were shot before, but it was in 'Navaron' that a fundamentally new concept was presented to the viewer - 'people on assignment'. This essentially simple and unpretentious film is an example of the ideal cinematic hitting the bull's-eye. ![]()
